104 places to practice adventure sports in Cusco

The Regional Office of Foreign Trade and Tourism suspended the practice of adventure sports due to accidents that occurred at the beginning of the year. After several months, they approved 104 safe sites.

This generated mistrust and decreased the number of visitors who hired this type of service. Then, due to the harsh criticism, the Regional Directorate of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Dircetur) suspended this practice indefinitely.

While the suspension was applied, Dircetur began working on the identification of safe areas for the practice of adventure sports in the imperial region. That in compliance with the regulation that regulates this activity.

After several months of work, Dircetur approved the zoning of 104 sites where adventure sports can be done. For example, canoeing can be practiced on the Vilcanota River in the Quiquijana area and on the Apurímac River in Suycutambo; and zip-line in Maras and other sites in the Sacred Valley of the Incas

Rosendo Baca, head of Dircetur, said that all spaces meet safe conditions for the development of ten types of adventure sports. Highlights zip-line, cycling, boating, climbing, horseback riding and paragliding. The incorporation of other sports will be sought later.

He also said that only 9 travel agencies are authorized to market adventure sports and there are 22 others that processed the license. «Cusco has adventure sports with security,» he said.

To ensure safety there will also be control and surveillance of Dircetur, Police, among other sectors. «We have taken an important step to remove the feeling of insecurity in the practice of adventure sports,» he noted.
